Ballarat Community Health hosts Elder Abuse Prevention Forum to Develop an Elder Abuse Network
Ballarat Community Health with the assistance of Senior Rights Victoria (SRV) will host a forum for organisations and community groups to develop an Elder Abuse Prevention Network (EAPN) on Monday 26th February.
Elder abuse is any form of violence or mistreatment that causes harm to an older person, and occurs within a relationship of trust. Elder abuse can include acts of psychological, physical, financial and sexual abuse, as well as neglect. Prevention of elder abuse is important given the rising number of older people in Australia, lack of reporting, difficulty in resolving problems once they happen and damage to family relationships that can occur. Tackling the drivers of elder abuse requires addressing ageism and other forms of potential disadvantage, such as cultural and linguistic difference, disability, racism, sexual orientation and gender equity.
In May 2017, the Victorian Government launched the Free from Violence Strategy to prevent all forms of violence against women. The strategy recognises that elder abuse affects both men and women and it is through this strategy that Ballarat Community Health applied for and received funding to create and coordinate a regional Elder Abuse Prevention Network (EAPN).
The aim of the forum is to develop a network of local groups and services who are motivated to prevent elder abuse in their local community. The network will cover six local government areas (Ararat, Ballarat, Golden Plains, Hepburn, Moorabool and Pyrenees).
Central Highlands Integrated Family Violence Committee will support the network and the engagement of the Primary Care Partnerships, Local Government, Aged Care Alliances, the Ballarat Multicultural Council and community groups such as Men’s Sheds and Senior Citizen’s groups will ensure a strong partnership.
The forum will include guest speakers from Senior Rights Victoria, and the Victims Survivors’ Advisory Council and will workshop activities to develop the network.
