Welcome to the Ballarat Mental Health Month art exhibition, where local artists use their creative genius to raise awareness about mental health in our community.

Somehow, growing a life drew my attention to growth around me. It brought me back to being a younger me, who used to run barefoot through the long grasses and climb trees just to sit in them and listen to the sound they made in the wind. I’d try to blend in to the tree. Watch the world go by from up high. After our babe was born my brain exploded with darkness that spread and grew for three years without diagnosis. The trees vanished. Art vanished. Now, years on My relationship with art is like a therapy of sorts. It’s sometimes hard to get to, I have to make an appointment with myself to do it. It’s difficult to begin, I have to allow time for the thinking to become marks. It’s costly, I’m placing a valuable piece of myself on paper for others to see and make their own thoughts about. How I approach my art and subject matter is directly related to living with my mental illness, I pay particular attention to capturing small aspects, simple parts of trees, and making them stand alone. This is possibly an unconscious reminder to take time to see and celebrate small details in everyday life. To slow down and see the spaces, the air the quiet around them.

So often it is easy to become absorbed in the self and loose sight of our environment when living with a mental health condition. There is a lack of autonomy over our thoughts, and they gradually convince us that isolation is preferable to anything else. From the outside we can look in a mirror and see ourselves as everyone does. Quiet, thoughtful, introverted, and shy. The reality, is that from the inside looking out there is constant noise. The colours are life and the environment consistently pushing itself in, and this is reflected in the mind. It is never still, and never quiet. The outside world is constantly projecting new stimulations, burdens, barriers, opinions, and responsibilities into an already jumbled mess of realities. It becomes difficult to seperate ones own thoughts from the societal voice telling you what to think and what is wrong with you. Therefore it is ultimately easier to seperate yourself, and shut out the noise. Remove all the colours and stimulation so that you are only left with your thoughts. It is easier to think this way, but at what cost? – A look into depression and anxiety.

jasmine goon Title of work#1: The Digression of Depression, Should Not Be Repression Medium: Digital Collage and hand drawing (charcoal, oil, paint markers, and acrylic paint) Size: 29.7x42cm Not for sale Artist statement: Poor mental health across anyone can be prominently evident in various ways. This artwork portrays the multiple characteristics a person presents for other people. People who experience depression tend to frequently try and conceal, as well as repress their emotions. Each figure subjects the inner mind through the visual lens of a mentally ill individual. Most prevalently, teenagers and young adults have experienced rapid alarming rises in poor mental health following COVID. Communities are affected by the impacts that mental illnesses have had on people. It’s inevitable that mental health requires more than suggesting redirected help as an instant response, it involves being the person who will listen, understand and validate someone’s feelings and experiences. Only then, will people confide towards help with the aide of a trusted friend and gradually eliminate those repressed feelings.
